Marl faces costly decay of historic AV 1/2 shaft scaffolding in Hüls

The two shaft scaffolding (Fördertürme) of the former AV 1/2 mining site in Hüls, a district of Marl, are severely corroded. Rust has already eaten through the supporting elements of shaft 2, and no owner has taken responsibility for the structures.

Heritage‑protection officials have been unable to secure a viable future concept, while experts warn that a full renovation would run into the millions of euros. The city of Marl has ruled out a complete demolition for now and plans to appoint an expert to mediate the dispute. Mining specialist Boris Aleff has publicly expressed concern over the deteriorating condition and the lack of action.

The situation highlights the challenges of preserving industrial monuments in the region, with the cost of restoration and unclear ownership delaying any decisive measures.
