Brazil reports surge in diverse fraud and scam incidents

Brazil is experiencing a surge in diverse fraudulent schemes targeting various demographics. In Marília, a woman stole R$ 13,000 from an 83-year-old man with Alzheimer's by posing as a promotional representative. In Uberaba, an entrepreneur lost over R$ 177,000 to criminals impersonating a lawyer and a representative of the Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ) during a virtual meeting.

Other notable incidents include a man arrested in Paraná for an ‘emotional scam’ that defrauded a woman of R$ 641,000 by posing as a doctor. In the Curitiba metropolitan area, a mother and daughter were arrested for using the ‘winning ticket’ scam to rob an elderly woman. In Macau, Rio Grande do Norte police arrested a couple for running a scheme involving illegal loan fees and forged documents targeting vulnerable people.

Additional reports highlight a consumer in Olímpia being billed for an iPhone 14 she never ordered through a telecommunications provider, and a man in Barretos losing R$ 8,400 following a fake Facebook advertisement for truck parts. In Campo Grande, the judiciary ordered a defendant to repay R$ 980 and pay damages after a fraudulent loan offer resulted in financial loss.
