Marlon Maya released from detention in Venezuela

Marlon Maya, a lawyer and member of the Vente Venezuela opposition party, has been released by a court in Barinas state, Venezuela. Maya, who also serves as the president of the Pedraza Bar Association, was detained on Friday night without a judicial warrant.

The Fundación de Derechos Humanos de los Llanos (Fundehullan) reported that Maya was released on Monday at 4:32 p.m. local time under a precautionary measure that does not require regular court appearances. The NGO criticized the initial arrest, stating it violated constitutional rights to personal liberty and due process.

This release occurs within a complex political transition following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by US forces in January. While the interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez has implemented various releases and an amnesty law, human rights organizations continue to report new political detentions. Foro Penal currently estimates there are 322 political detainees in the country.
