Marlon Ritter discusses departure from Schalke youth academy

Marlon Ritter, the current captain of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, has shared details regarding his departure from the FC Schalke 04 youth academy. Ritter, who played in Schalke’s ‘Knappenschmiede’ from 2002 to 2008, revealed that the intense, highly structured daily routine of elite youth football became overwhelming by age 15.

During his adolescence, Ritter lost interest in competitive football due to the lack of free time and the pressure of a schedule that left no room for a normal childhood. He described a period where he would skip training sessions to play games like ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ or ‘Pokemon’ with friends, leading to a situation where his school believed he was at training while the club believed he was in class. Ultimately, Ritter and his mother decided to leave the club to escape the pressure.
