Kayseri seismic activity linked to unnamed fault
Geologist Adnan Evsen has addressed the recent surge in seismic activity in the Pınarbaşı district of Kayseri. Over the past 100 days, approximately 300 earthquakes have been recorded in the area between Yassıpınar village and the Borandere regions.
Evsen clarified that these tremors are not occurring on the Sarız Fault, as some social media reports suggested. Instead, they originate from an unnamed, previously unmapped fault located near the Deliler Fault. This fault is estimated to be approximately 5 kilometers long and is expected to produce earthquakes with a maximum magnitude of 5.5. Evsen noted that due to its short length, it is unlikely to trigger larger seismic events or affect the nearby Sarız or Malakköy faults.
In a separate geological assessment regarding the Marmara region, Professor Osman Bektaş reported that the Main Marmara Fault is exhibiting unexpected movement. Data indicates the fault is sliding at a rate of 33 to 57 millimeters per year at depths of 10 to 20 kilometers, which is nearly twice the speed of the general movement between the Anatolian and Eurasian plates. Bektaş explained that much of this movement is being absorbed as slow creep or micro-earthquakes by an 8-kilometer thick sediment layer, potentially reducing the immediate risk of a massive rupture, though a 3-kilometer thick brittle section remains capable of producing earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher.
