Marmaris explores sustainable tourism at European workshop

Marmaris, a finalist for the European Green Pioneer 2026 award, participated in the Smart Tourism Workshop held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, from September 8–10. The event was organized under the European Commission’s ‘European Smart Tourism Capital and Green Pioneer’ program.

Represented by Doç. Dr. Didem Gamze Işıksal, the Marmaris municipality delegation engaged with various European tourism centers to study sustainable and innovative practices. Key topics included managing visitor density, climate change adaptation, data-driven tourism management, and balancing local quality of life with visitor experiences.

The workshop included field visits focused on circular economy applications, infrastructure, waste management, and energy efficiency. Işıksal stated that the goal is to integrate these international experiences into Marmaris’s tourism vision to protect its natural values and local identity while fostering sustainable development.
