Marmaris goat herders maintain century-old maritime tradition
In the Marmaris district of Turkey, specifically around Söğüt and Bozburun, a century-old Yörük tradition of goat herding continues through unique maritime methods. Due to the lack of roads, electricity, and water in the Ali Gelmeyesi peninsula, herders must transport their livestock by boat twice a year.
Local herder Tanju Varol explains that goats are moved to the village during the summer months to avoid water shortages on the island. Once the goats are approximately 2.5 months pregnant, they are transported back to the winter quarters. While historical transport relied on oars and sails, modern herders now use motorized boats and rely on meteorological data to plan their journeys.
Despite the adaptation to technology, the tradition faces challenges. The rise of tourism in the region has led to a decline in the number of people practicing nomadic goat herding, leaving only a few families to maintain this cultural heritage.
