Marne authorities close seasonal worker housing in Champagne

The Prefect of Marne has ordered the closure of a seasonal worker accommodation site in Damery, located in the Champagne wine region, following an inspection by the gendarmerie and labor inspectors.

Authorities reported that the site was operating without the required state declarations and failed to meet basic living standards. Findings included workers being housed in tents, insufficient general hygiene, and faulty sanitary and toilet facilities. At the time of the inspection, four workers were residing at the location.

A judicial investigation has been launched at the request of the public prosecutor to determine responsibility for the organization and use of the site. This enforcement comes amid heightened inspections during the grape harvest season to ensure the safety and living conditions of seasonal laborers.
