Maros River tributaries dry up in Arad County amid severe drought

A severe drought is impacting the Maros River and its surrounding regions. In Arad County, all tributaries of the Maros have dried up due to months of insufficient precipitation. The river's water flow is currently at approximately one-third of its typical volume for this period.

Measurement points across Arad County show significantly low levels. At Lippá, the flow is at 26 percent of the long-term average, while at Nagylak, it is at 32 percent. In Hungary, the water level at Makó reached a critical low of minus 117 centimeters on September 1, following a record low of minus 124 centimeters in October 2025.

The drought has caused substantial agricultural damage, with approximately 1,300 farmers in Arad County reporting losses in autumn crops, particularly wheat, affecting 79,359 hectares. Additionally, the water shortage has disrupted domestic supplies. In 16 settlements within Arad County, water is being shut off nightly between midnight and 4 AM to allow for reservoir replenishment. In Kiszenden, residents reportedly receive piped water for only two hours each day.
