Marosnémeti power plant completes first gas turbine test run
The Marosnémeti power plant has reached a significant technical milestone with the first test run of its number one gas turbine. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced that the facility, which is being built on the site of a former coal-fired plant, has successfully operated the turbine using natural gas for the first time.
The project represents a private investment exceeding 1.2 billion euros. The two gas turbines will have a combined capacity of approximately 1,100 MW, while the total installed capacity of the plant is expected to reach nearly 1,700 MW once the combined cycle is completed.
Following the completion of testing and synchronization with the national grid, the plant will begin supplying electricity to the Romanian national energy system. This new capacity is intended to increase domestic electricity production, reduce energy imports, and strengthen Romania's energy security, particularly during peak demand periods in the evenings and during winter. The facility is expected to contribute to the grid's stability starting in 2027.
