Marowijne launches first local nursing training program
Suriname's Minister of Health, André Misiekaba, has officially opened the first COVAB healthcare training program in the Marowijne district. This initiative aims to address nursing shortages at the Marowijne Regional Hospital (SZM) by providing local education, reducing the need for residents to relocate to Paramaribo to study.
Out of approximately 90 applicants, 53 students have enrolled across three programs: 41 in the MBO Nursing program, nine in Patient Care, and three in the HBO Nursing program. The MBO students are expected to complete their studies by December 2029.
SZM Director Henk Aviankoi and acting COVAB Director Suze Holband emphasized the importance of high-quality, local training to strengthen regional healthcare. District Commissioner Marvin Vijent noted that the program will also help students avoid the high costs associated with studying in the capital.
