Marree Man geoglyph remains a mystery in South Australia

The Marree Man, a massive geoglyph depicting a moving human figure, remains a mystery in South Australia. Discovered in 1998 near the town of Marree, the figure measures over four kilometers in length, making it nearly impossible to see from the ground.

The artwork was created by removing a thin surface layer of soil using a vehicle, suggesting the creator used precise maps or instructions. Despite investigations by Australian authorities, the identity of the artist has never been officially confirmed. Various theories have emerged, ranging from an individual artist—such as American artist J. O. Gelfand, though no evidence supports this—to military projects or satellite-related operations.

Due to erosion from wind and rain, the figure began to fade over time. Following a debate over whether to let it disappear naturally or restore it, a project was launched in 2016 to renew the geoglyph using GPS technology.
