Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program faces criticism over resort fees on free nights
Marriott International’s Bonvoy loyalty program, created after the 2018 Marriott‑Starwood merger, now covers more than 30 brands and nearly 10,000 properties worldwide. While the program promotes broad earning and redemption options, critics note that many free‑night awards are not truly free because hotels charge resort and destination fees that can add $60 to $200 to a stay, even when booked with points. Franchise agreements allow Marriott to require these fees, and the company does not waive them for elite members, reducing the perceived value of the program.
The program also includes extensive credit‑card partnerships with Chase and American Express, and it has expanded airline transfer options in 2026, adding partners such as Japan Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines and adjusting transfer ratios. Recent award‑price increases and the introduction of new airline benefits have further shaped the experience for members.
