Mars bar from 1991 sparks shrinkflation debate

A professional cleaner in Scunthorpe, Victoria Gordon, has sparked a viral debate regarding shrinkflation after discovering an unopened Mars bar from 1991 during a house clearance. The vintage bar, weighing approximately 62.5g to 65g, is significantly larger than modern versions, which typically weigh between 40g and 51g.

The discovery has highlighted the economic phenomenon of shrinkflation, where manufacturers reduce product size while maintaining or increasing prices. The 1991 bar was priced at 25p, whereas current versions are listed at approximately £1.30. Gordon, who operates the cleaning business Pocket Rockets, noted the bar was nearly the size of her hand.

A spokesperson for Mars stated that the company has updated bar sizes and packaging formats over the last 35 years to reflect consumer demand and external factors, including manufacturing costs and cocoa prices.
