Mars dust contains toxic perchlorates posing risks to astronauts

Research indicates that Martian soil poses significant chemical risks to future astronauts due to the presence of perchlorate salts. Data from NASA’s Phoenix lander, which analyzed soil in the northern plains, revealed perchlorate concentrations of approximately 0.4% to 0.6% by mass. These salts can interfere with the human thyroid's ability to absorb iodide, potentially disrupting hormone production if dust is tracked into pressurized habitats via spacesuits.

Beyond perchlorates, Martian dust may contain other hazards, including carcinogens like silica and various heavy metals. While Martian particles are described as more rounded than the sharp, abrasive dust found on the Moon, their chemical composition presents a unique mission-design challenge.

To mitigate these risks, NASA is working toward establishing preliminary dust exposure standards by 2026, aiming for a permissible concentration of approximately 0.1 milligrams per cubic meter in living environments. Ongoing research includes testing the durability of materials like Teflon and Kevlar, developing dust-clearing technologies, and exploring ways to use microbes to convert toxic perchlorates into useful resources like oxygen and chloride.
