Mars dust storms could generate hazardous electric fields, study warns

A research team from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center analyzed data from the 2018 global dust storm on Mars (Martian Year 34). Their models indicate that the storm created localized, altitude‑dependent electric fields in the lower atmosphere that approach breakdown‑favorable conditions, effectively charging the atmosphere.

The authors suggest that future Mars missions should treat major dust storms not only as visibility, thermal and aerodynamic hazards, but also as electrostatic environments that could affect spacecraft systems, habitats, instruments or communications. While the study does not quantify risk to specific hardware, it highlights a new class of potential threat for robotic and crewed exploration.

The findings add to ongoing planetary‑protection and mission‑design considerations as space agencies plan more frequent and ambitious missions to the Red Planet.
