Mars Express captures new imagery of Schiaparelli Crater
The European Space Agency (ESA) has released new video footage captured by the Mars Express orbiter, showing detailed views of Mars' Southern Highlands and the Schiaparelli Crater. The imagery was obtained using the spacecraft's High Resolution Stereo Camera, which scans the surface from multiple angles to generate color 3D renderings.
Schiaparelli Crater, one of the largest impact sites on Mars with a diameter exceeding 460 kilometers, is located in a heavily cratered region. ESA researchers indicate that approximately 3.7 billion years ago, this area experienced a warmer and wetter climate, with ancient waterflows playing a significant role in shaping the local geography.
While the crater is shallower than other impact sites of similar scale due to billions of years of sediment, volcanic material, and asteroid debris filling the basin, the new data provides a clearer look at the Martian landscape. The mission, which launched in 2003, continues to contribute to increasingly complex global models of Mars.
