Mars research reveals recent liquid water and thermal activity

New scientific findings regarding Mars suggest the planet was more geologically and hydrologically active more recently than previously believed. Data from the Chinese Zhurong rover indicates that liquid water may have existed on the surface of Utopia Planitia as recently as 757 million years ago. Researchers identified crystals of selenite, a variety of gypsum that forms in the presence of concentrated saltwater, suggesting intermittent flows of brine.

Additionally, independent studies suggest Mars may remain thermally active in its interior, with a notable temperature difference between the northern and southern hemispheres. This dichotomy could explain the preservation of ancient magnetic fields.

Separately, NASA’s Curiosity rover captured a transient visual phenomenon in Gale Crater resembling a jellyfish. Scientists suggest the image is likely not a permanent geological or biological structure, but rather an artifact caused by cosmic rays hitting the rover’s CCD sensors, a common occurrence in Mars’ thin atmosphere, or a result of pareidolia.
