Marsala tornado death: Man dies after week in hospital
Antonino Fortunato, a man in his late 60s, has died following a tornado that struck Marsala and Petrosino in Sicily on October 9. Fortunato was traveling in his vehicle with his wife on the SS 115 when the tornado hit.
He was transported to the Civico Hospital in Palermo with severe injuries and passed away after one week of hospitalization. His wife also sustained injuries during the incident. In response to the death, Marsala Mayor Andreana Patti declared city mourning.
The tornado caused widespread destruction in the region, impacting residential homes, commercial structures, and the Alcide De Gasperi school. Local labor unions have called for increased institutional intervention and infrastructure safety measures to address the growing risks posed by extreme weather and climate change.
