Marsala's 74th Rassegna Meccanico Agricola sparks debate over horse parade
The 74th edition of the Rassegna Meccanico Agricola in Strasatti, Marsala, Italy, scheduled from 31 July to 4 August 2026, has been rebranded as “'A Fera di Strasatti.” A newly appointed three‑year committee, led by President Antonino Pulizzi and Vice‑President Nicola Anastasi, outlined plans to preserve the fair’s historic roots while introducing new organizational structures, safety measures, and expanded activities.
At the same time, local resident Miriam Di Girolamo has called for the removal of the traditional horse‑drawn parade, arguing that using horses as decorative elements violates animal‑welfare standards referenced in Article 13 of the EU Treaty. She urges officials to replace the “cavalli imbardati” with alternative displays, emphasizing that not all traditions are ethically acceptable.
