Marshall football players Jalen Slappy and Toby Payne named to national award watch lists

Senior offensive lineman Jalen Slappy of Marshall University was added to the 2026 Outland Trophy preseason watch list, joining 67 other interior linemen recognized by the Football Writers Association of America. Slappy, a five‑year starter who has played both guard and tackle, has helped Marshall rank among the top 25 rushing offenses in recent seasons.

Senior tight end Toby Payne also earned a preseason honor, being named to the 2026 John Mackey Award watch list, which highlights the nation’s top collegiate tight ends. Payne recorded 37 receptions for 393 yards and three touchdowns last season and was a key blocker in Marshall’s rushing attack.

Both players were praised by head coach Tony Gibson for their leadership on and off the field.
