Marshall University wins legal dispute with Pitt over cancelled football game
Marshall University has secured legal victories in its dispute with the University of Pittsburgh regarding a cancelled football game. A Pennsylvania court previously upheld a decision to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Pitt against Marshall, citing that Marshall, as a West Virginia entity, cannot be sued in Pennsylvania.
Subsequently, a jury in Cabell County Circuit Court ruled in favor of Marshall in a lawsuit filed by the university. The dispute stems from a 2016 two-game series where the return match in Huntington was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Marshall sought damages or a rescheduled game after efforts to finalize new dates failed.
Marshall Chief Legal Officer Toney Stroud indicated that the University of Pittsburgh is expected to appeal the jury's decision to the West Virginia Intermediate Court of Appeals, potentially leading to the West Virginia Supreme Court.
