Marsha’s, Philadelphia’s first queer women’s sports bar, announces closure
Marsha’s, a sports bar on South Street in Philadelphia recognized as the city’s first dedicated space for queer women, has announced it will permanently close its doors after approximately one year of operation.
The closure follows a series of controversies involving the establishment. Earlier this year, former employees publicly accused the management of fostering transphobia and racism. Olivia Rhodes, a Black transgender manager and bartender, described the venue as a “hell” for gay patrons. While owner Chivonn Anderson initially denied the allegations, she later issued a public apology, changed management, and implemented staff training.
Despite these efforts, the bar's reputation suffered significant damage. Organizations such as Philly Black Pride canceled scheduled events at the venue, and many patrons began boycotting the establishment, which ultimately impacted its business viability.
