Marsha's women's sports bar in Philadelphia to close
Marsha's, a Philadelphia sports bar dedicated to women's sports and the queer community, is closing permanently this weekend. Opened in September 2025 on South Street, the establishment was named after transgender activist Marsha P. Johnson.
Owner Chivonn Anderson stated that the bar will remain open Friday through Sunday for a final weekend. In a statement, Anderson expressed a belief that the city still requires more women, queer, and BIPOC-owned businesses and hoped another entrepreneur would fill the void.
The closure follows allegations from former employees regarding workplace culture. Some former staff members claimed the venue was not sufficiently inclusive, with one alleging that management made disparaging remarks about female and nonbinary employees. Anderson denied these claims but had previously indicated an intention to consult with human resources and DEI experts to ensure accountability.
