Marta García wins silver at European Athletics Championships
Spanish athletes experienced mixed results at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Marta García secured a silver medal in the 5,000 metres with a time of 15:39.98, finishing behind Italy’s Nadia Battocletti. García, who had previously struggled with severe back pain, successfully executed a tactical race to improve upon her bronze medal from the previous championships in Rome. Other notable Spanish performances in the 5,000m included María Forero in eighth place and Idaira Prieto in ninth.
In contrast, the men’s 110m hurdles saw significant disappointment for Spain as both Quique Llopis and Asier Martínez were eliminated in the semifinals. Llopis finished third in his heat with a time of 13.47, while Martínez finished fourth in his with 13.45. Both athletes failed to qualify for the final, marking a setback for the Spanish delegation in that event. Additionally, Marta Mitjans reached the 800m semifinals after setting a new Spanish U23 record.
