Marta Kos proposes major reform to EU enlargement process
EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has unveiled a proposal for a fundamental reform of the European Union's accession process. Speaking in Zagreb, Kos described the current geopolitical shift as a new ‘Helsinki Moment,’ comparing it to the era that facilitated major expansion following the Cold War.
The proposed reform includes a transition toward gradual integration, more rigorous screening of candidate countries, and a new methodology to manage a Union that could eventually exceed 30 members. Kos emphasized that the enlargement policy must evolve to remain functional and capable of responding to crises.
Kos highlighted several candidate nations, noting Montenegro’s rapid progress and Albania’s advancements in the rule of law. She also recognized technical progress made by Ukraine and Moldova, and noted Iceland’s decision to reactivate its accession process. The Commission intends to present these ideas ahead of a critical debate among EU leaders scheduled for October.
