MARTA Stadler CQ400 trains face service delays in Georgia
The deployment of MARTA’s new Stadler CQ400 trains in Georgia has faced delays, leaving the official service commencement date uncertain. Although the trains were initially targeted to begin passenger service by June 2026—ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup—they have yet to enter operational use.
The CQ400 units are currently undergoing extensive static and dynamic testing to meet federal and state safety regulations. Final deployment is contingent upon certification from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), which must review test results to ensure compliance with safety, accessibility, and reliability standards.
These delays impact broader transit expansion efforts. For example, the Bankhead station platform extension, required to accommodate the longer CQ400 train sets, is currently underway and not slated for completion until 2027. Full utilization of the new fleet's capacity is dependent on these infrastructure upgrades.
