Martha Argerich honored with Salzburg Festival award

Pianist Martha Argerich has been honored with the ‘Festspielnadel mit Rubinen’ (Festival Pin with Rubies) by the Salzburg Festival. The award was presented by the festival directorate and concert chief Axel Hiller following her solo performance alongside Renaud Capuçon at the Haus für Mozart.

Argerich has been associated with the Salzburg Festival for 55 years, having made her debut there in 1971 with the Czech Philharmonic Prague under the direction of Claudio Abbado. The festival directorate described her as the ‘Grande Dame of piano playing,’ noting that her performances are singular events.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argerich rose to international prominence after winning the Concours de Genève in 1957, the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition, and the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1965. She joins a distinguished group of previous recipients, including Cecilia Bartoli, Grigory Sokolov, and Daniel Barenboim.
