Martha Stewart discusses Kmart royalties and financial losses

Martha Stewart recently shared details regarding her financial history and the evolution of brand royalties during an appearance on the MasterClass podcast, ‘Other People’s Business’. She highlighted her significant partnership with Kmart in the 1990s, which launched the ‘Martha Stewart Everyday’ brand. During that period, she reported earning approximately $65 million annually in royalties from nearly $2 billion in merchandise sales.

Stewart also discussed a period of significant financial loss, stating she lost about $1 billion during a difficult stage of her life. This period followed her 2004–2005 prison sentence, which resulted from convictions for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and making false statements to federal investigators regarding the sale of ImClone Systems stock.

Reflecting on modern business, Stewart noted that royalty structures have changed, with current rates often being much lower than those of the past. She also commented on the impact of social media, noting that many influencers, including herself, frequently receive goods rather than direct cash payments for appearances.
