Martha Stewart apologizes for offensive Halloween costume
Lifestyle mogul Martha Stewart has issued two apologies following intense social media backlash over her Halloween costume. The 85-year-old entrepreneur posted an image on Instagram depicting herself as a homeless person, wearing tattered clothing and smeared makeup while holding a sign that read, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”
The controversial photo was part of a promotional carousel for her QVC candle collection. Critics labeled the portrayal as “out of touch,” “insensitive,” and “offensive,” particularly noting the juxtaposition of a depiction of extreme poverty with a commercial advertisement for lifestyle products. Many users pointed to Stewart’s estimated $400 million net worth as evidence of her disconnect from the realities of economic hardship.
Stewart initially defended the choice, stating the costume was intended to raise awareness about the serious crisis of homelessness in the United States. However, she later issued a second, more direct apology on Instagram, admitting her previous statement did not go far enough. “I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry,” Stewart stated.
