Martijanec archaeological site reveals massive Iron Age settlement

Archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb have continued investigations at the Kazinščak site in Martijanec. The site contains a settlement from the Early Iron Age, dating to the 7th and 6th centuries BCE, belonging to the Eastern Hallstatt culture.

Spanning approximately 40 hectares, the settlement is believed to be one of the largest of its kind in continental Croatia. Current research utilizes non-destructive methods, including geophysical scanning led by Dr. Jerome Drpić, to examine the settlement and potential tumuli, which are thought to be monumental princely graves of prominent community members.

The project, overseen by Dr. Saša Kovačević, is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Media, the Institute of Archaeology, and the Municipality of Martijanec. Following the work in Martijanec, researchers plan to expand to the Slanje – Stari Gradec area and several other locations including Črnoglavec, Segovina, and Planjevi. If weather conditions permit, the current phase of research is expected to continue until October 20.
