Martin Greensmith convicted of manslaughter after killing biological father

Martin Greensmith, 37, has been found guilty of manslaughter following a seven-day trial at Teesside Crown Court. The incident occurred on Christmas Eve last year at the Queen’s Head pub in Willington, County Durham.

Greensmith had been informed that 61-year-old Steven Shevels was his biological father only hours before the tragedy. During an interaction in the pub's beer garden, Greensmith pushed Shevels, causing him to strike his head on the concrete floor. Shevels subsequently died from his injuries.

While Greensmith initially joined others in attempting to help the victim, he fled the scene before emergency services arrived and was arrested at his home the following day. Digital forensics revealed that Greensmith had used his mobile phone to search for information regarding involuntary manslaughter and legal solicitors shortly after the event.

Detective Chief Inspector Alfie Keane of the Durham Constabulary described the case as “truly devastating,” noting the life-long consequences of split-second decisions.
