Martin Lewis urges UK public to claim lost pensions
Consumer finance presenter Martin Lewis has called on people in the United Kingdom to check for unclaimed pension pots, warning that around £87 billion of pension assets remain lost. He highlighted that many individuals are unaware they have a missing pension, with the average value of these assets estimated at about £9,500. Lewis cited a listener’s story in which a forgotten contracted‑out pension grew from £22,000 to over £89,000 after being traced, and noted that some people have recovered more than £150,000.
He advised anyone who suspects they may have a lost pension to contact former employers for scheme details and to use the government’s free pension‑tracing service, which holds information on more than 200,000 schemes. The campaign aims to reconnect retirees and others with their retirement savings.
