Martin Lewis urges UK to check council tax refunds, licence renewals
MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis advised UK households to verify whether they are due a council tax refund after new Prime Minister Andy Burnham highlighted the system as unfair. Lewis said the existing banding system, based on 1991 valuations, may mean many are overpaying, and urged people to use MSE’s free check‑and‑challenge tool to identify possible refunds and discounts such as single‑person, student, carer and benefit‑related cuts.
Lewis also warned motorists that 2.7 million driving licences are set to expire this year. He urged drivers to inspect the Section 4B expiry date on the front of their licence, noting that driving with an expired licence can attract a fine of up to £1,000. Online renewal costs £14, while drivers over 70 must renew every three years and provide a medical declaration.
