Martin Luther University researchers develop new molecular framework analysis method

Researchers at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) have developed a new analytical method using tiny magnetic probes to investigate chemical forces within the pores of molecular framework compounds. This technique allows for a more precise measurement of the chemical environment inside these structures than previously possible.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous, crystalline compounds with potential applications in filtering water pollutants and acting as catalysts for chemical reactions. Previous standard methods, such as measuring nitrogen molecule absorption at minus 196 degrees Celsius, provided snapshots of the pores but failed to capture information regarding chemical interactions due to frozen molecular motion. The new method aims to overcome these limitations, enabling scientists to better understand and fine-tune the properties of these materials for future use.
