Martin Mull documentary explores comedy career and passion for painting
The Netflix biographical documentary ‘Who Is Martin Mull?’ explores the life and dual legacy of the late comedian and actor. While widely recognized for his television and film roles in series such as ‘Arrested Development’ and ‘Roseanne’, the film highlights that Mull considered himself a struggling artist first, viewing his comedy career as a ‘day job’ that supported his true passion for painting.
The project faced significant production challenges following the death of original director Bob Saget in 2022. Co-director Neil Berkeley completed the film, which features insights from family members and colleagues.
In the documentary, Mull’s daughter, Maggie Mull, discusses her father’s influence on her own artistic journey. She recalls their connection through art and how his dedication to his painting studio shaped her childhood. The film serves as a retrospective of a man who transitioned from a successful touring musical comedian to a staple of American television.
