Martin Odegaard scores decisive goal in Arsenal victory over Napoli
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard secured a 1-0 victory for his side against Napoli in a Champions League match, scoring the decisive goal in the 75th minute. The Norwegian midfielder's strike came after a combination involving Ben White and Christos Tzolis, resulting in a shot that deflected off goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic into the net.
This performance highlights a significant tactical evolution for Odegaard during the 2026/27 season. Following a difficult 2025/26 campaign hampered by knee injuries, where he scored only one goal, Odegaard has become much more direct. Statistics show he is now making an average of 3.2 high-intensity runs into the opposition box per 90 minutes, more than double his previous rate of 1.4.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta noted that the team requires players with the mentality to decide matches with such character. While his increased goal-scoring output—four goals in his last five matches—has been vital, it has also sparked debate regarding whether the team is becoming overly dependent on his individual brilliance to resolve matches.
