Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez has pleaded not guilty to a P7.44-billion plunder case involving alleged kickbacks from government flood control and infrastructure projects. The charges, filed by the Office of the Ombudsman, involve allegations that Romualdez and several co-accused, including former Representative Zaldy Co, received illegal payments.

Following his arrest on September 7, Romualdez was initially held at medical facilities. However, on September 14, the Sandiganbayan Third Division ordered his transfer to the New Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory in Payatas after doctors from the Philippine General Hospital testified that he was medically stable and fit for detention. Romualdez, who is a cousin of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., stated he would face the charges and maintain his innocence.

During his arraignment on September 16, the court allowed Romualdez to appear via video conference from the jail facility. The plunder charges are non-bailable. The case is now moving toward trial.
