Martin Schweinsberg Finds One in Three Daily Interactions Involve Negotiation
Negotiation researcher Martin Schweinsberg of the Wirtschaftsuniversität ESMT Berlin conducted a week‑long study in which participants recorded their everyday activities via a mobile app. The data showed that roughly one‑third of all social interactions contain a negotiation element, whether in the workplace, at home, or in informal settings.
Schweinsberg explained that even minor negotiations often trigger a "dip in mood" because people fear rejection. He noted that face‑to‑face negotiations feel more psychologically demanding than those conducted by email, where the risk of immediate refusal is lower. The findings highlight how pervasive bargaining is in daily life, extending far beyond the traditional contexts of salary or price discussions.
