Martin Scorsese and Paul Newman collaborate on The Color of Money
Released on October 17, 1986, The Color of Money served as a significant project for director Martin Scorsese, who was seeking a commercial success following a series of films that had not performed well at the box office. The film is a sequel to the 1961 classic The Hustler, based on the 1959 novel by Walter Tevis.
Paul Newman reprised his iconic role as Fast Eddie Felson, twenty-five years after his initial portrayal of the character. In this modern character study set in Chicago, the aging Felson mentors a young, hotheaded pool player played by Tom Cruise. The production featured cinematographer Michael Ballhaus and editor Thelma Schoonmaker, focusing on the psychological dynamics of competitive pool players.
