Martin Scorsese regrets directing Shutter Island

Director Martin Scorsese has expressed regret over making the 2010 psychological thriller ‘Shutter Island’, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. In an interview with GQ, Scorsese stated that his Best Director win for ‘The Departed’ led him to produce the film, but he believes he should have instead moved on to his long-gestating project, ‘Silence’.

While ‘Shutter Island’ was a commercial success, grossing nearly $295 million worldwide, Scorsese noted that the project cost him time that could have been spent on ‘Silence’, a film based on the novel by Shūsaku Endō that he had been interested in since 1989. He also identified ‘Shutter Island’ as the last studio film he directed before transitioning to funding through platforms like Netflix and Apple TV+.
