Martin Short discusses personal grief and mental health
Comedian Martin Short has opened up about his experiences with profound loss and his perspective on mental health. Following the death of his 42-year-old daughter, Katherine, by suicide in February, Short expressed a desire to speak about grief to show others they are not alone.
Short has faced a lifetime of bereavement, including the loss of his parents and his brother, David, before he turned 21. In 2010, his wife, Nancy Dolman, passed away from ovarian cancer. Reflecting on these experiences, Short noted that he has never utilized therapy, explaining that during his youth in Hamilton, Ontario, it did not seem to be an option. He stated, ‘It’s OK to be sad,’ and emphasized that he views sadness as a natural emotion rather than something that necessarily needs to be fixed.
He credited friends and family as his primary support system through these periods, noting that they help him ‘find the light.’ Short indicated he would only seek professional help if he experienced sudden despair without a clear cause, but otherwise views grief as a way of continuing a conversation with those who have passed.
