Martina Arroyo, acclaimed American soprano, dies at 90

Renowned American soprano Martina Arroyo has passed away at the age of 90 in Manhattan, New York. A prominent lyrical singer of her generation, Arroyo was recognized for her significant role in breaking racial barriers within the opera world.

Born in Harlem in 1936 to a Puerto Rican father and an African American mother, she rose to prominence during an era of limited opportunities for Black classical musicians. After winning the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1958, she debuted at the Metropolitan Opera the following year.

A defining moment in her career occurred in 1965 when she stepped in to perform the lead role in Verdi’s ‘Aida’ at the Metropolitan Opera, leading to a long-standing relationship with the institution. Over 20 artistic seasons, she participated in 200 performances at the Metropolitan Opera, performing works by Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, and Wagner.
