Martina Šimkovičová faces criticism over US working trip

Slovak Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová is facing criticism following a working trip to the United States to attend the 48th Slovak Heritage Festival in New Jersey. The trip has become a subject of public debate after a video surfaced showing the minister attempting to use a whip, which led to social media backlash regarding the use of public funds.

Former Culture Minister Natália Milanová questioned the necessity of the trip, suggesting that costs for flights and accommodation could total nearly 30,000 euros. In response, the Ministry of Culture defended the visit as an act of cultural diplomacy aimed at supporting Slovak heritage, meeting with teachers from Slovak weekend educational centers, and visiting the Holy Trinity Evangelical Church in New York.

Šimkovičová defended her actions, stating that while political criticism is legitimate, personal mockery is not. She emphasized that the mission was intended to support Slovak communities abroad and ensure that Slovak culture remains a living, evolving entity.
