Martina Navratilova celebrates 70th birthday

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova is celebrating her 70th birthday. Born Martina Subertova in Prague in 1956, the Czech-American athlete became one of the most successful players in tennis history, securing 18 Grand Slam singles titles and a total of 59 Grand Slam trophies across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

Her career was marked by significant personal and political milestones. At age 18, she sought political asylum in the United States following the US Open to escape the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. She officially became a US citizen in 1981 and later reclaimed her Czech citizenship in 2008. Navratilova was also a pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights in sports, openly coming out in 1981.

Beyond her athletic achievements, which include 332 weeks as world number one and a record nine Wimbledon singles titles, Navratilova has demonstrated resilience in her personal life, successfully overcoming battles with breast and throat cancer. She remains an active figure, known for her advocacy and her continued passion for fitness and sport.
