Martinique faces budget concerns and transport funding gaps
The Collectivité Territoriale de Martinique (CTM) has expressed concerns regarding the French government’s 2027 budget proposal. The CTM fears a reduction in financial maneuvering room for local policies as social expenditures rise, even as the central government aims to reduce the public deficit through new contributions from local authorities.
Simultaneously, Martinique faces significant pressure regarding its transport network. Martinique Transport is reportedly facing a 43 million euro deficit, impacting essential services including school transportation for approximately 15,000 children. While the Cap Nord intercommunality has released an additional 200,000 euros to assist, the CTM previously estimated that 7.5 million euros would be required to secure school transport services. The gap between available local funds and the total financial needs remains a major point of contention.
