Martinique maritime heritage project launches mini-yole for public education

The association Passion Voile Traditionnelle, founded by Aude Pitavy and supported by SFR Caraïbe, has launched the ‘Van Lévé’ project to preserve and transmit Martinican maritime heritage. The centerpiece is a 4.10-meter mini-yole designed for educational purposes and public initiation.

Constructed entirely of wood by experienced shipbuilder Philippe Attely, the vessel intentionally avoids modern materials like carbon to maintain authenticity and traditional craftsmanship. The project aims to reach diverse audiences, including students, families, and those previously disconnected from nautical activities.

Planned activities for the 2026-2027 season include a ‘Mini-Yole Tour’ visiting middle and high schools, free initiations in various communes, and workshops focused on traditional naval construction. The initiative seeks to pass down the skills and sensations associated with the ‘yole ronde’, a practice recognized by UNESCO.
