Martinique port implements €3M security plan to combat drug trafficking
The Grand Port Maritime of Martinique is implementing a €3 million security reinforcement plan to combat rising cocaine trafficking. The strategy, presented by Prefect Étienne Desplanques and port authorities, aims to increase the risks and costs for criminal networks operating along maritime routes connecting South America to Europe.
Key technological upgrades include the deployment of quadruped robots (robot dogs), drones, and advanced surveillance equipment to monitor complex sectors, docks, and containers that fixed cameras cannot easily reach. The initiative also focuses on tightening access controls and internal prevention, specifically targeting the vetting of personnel with access to port facilities.
This escalation follows a significant increase in drug seizures in the region. In 2024, the French National Navy seized nearly 30 tonnes of cocaine in Martinique, while the Armed Forces in the Antilles intercepted 35.7 tonnes of narcotics in the region in 2025, up from 28.3 tonnes the previous year.
