Martín Vizcarra transferred from prison for renal treatment
Former Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra has been transferred from the Barbadillo prison to a medical center to receive treatment for serious renal problems. The transfer was conducted via an ambulance from the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) under police escort.
Vizcarra has been incarcerated since November following a first-instance judicial sentence of 14 years in prison for bribery related to the Lomas de Ilo and Moquegua Regional Hospital cases. This marks his seventh medical transfer in 2026, including previous visits to Vitarte Hospital and private clinics.
His legal defense remains optimistic regarding an upcoming appeal hearing scheduled for August 20, where they aim to overturn the conviction by arguing the proceedings were a result of political persecution.
