Martyrdom of Saints Elodie and Nunilon in 9th-century Spain
The Church commemorates Saints Elodie and Nunilon, two sisters martyred in 851 during the period of Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula. Born to a Muslim father and a Christian mother, the sisters were raised in the Christian faith.
Following the death of their father, their stepfather attempted to force them to renounce Christianity and marry, citing Islamic law and a decree by the Emir of Cordoba, Abd al-Rahman II, which prohibited Christian practice. Despite seeking refuge with a Christian relative, the sisters remained steadfast in their religious convictions.
According to tradition, the sisters were imprisoned and pressured to apostatize due to their paternal ancestry. They refused to renounce their faith and were ultimately executed by decapitation near Castro-Viejo, in the region of Huesca.
